Archilochos' Poems

detail from Archilochos monument - gives link to home page

About 100 fragments of Archilochos' poetry have come down to us, mainly because they were quoted by later authors. The poems have no titles but, for convenience of identification, for this project, names have been given to the ones included on this website. The number next to the name refers to the numbers used by Campbell in Greek Lyric Poetry (see acknowledgement page).

In the poems that follow the Greek and literal translations open in separate windows. By setting these windows at appropriate widths you can line up the text and compare them on a word by word basis. These windows can be closed to leave the main English window behind. On other pages, to navigate around the site, use the links on the right or your browser's 'back' button. If you get lost click on the 'logo' at the top right to get back to the home page.
